Taking care of your tools by keeping them dry, clean and maintained, will save you time and money in the future.
No matter what type of tools whether its hand tools, power tools, or gardening tools, our tips will apply to them all!

#1 - Store Them Properly

Using a pegboard is a great use for storing tools. It give you the chance to see all your tools at a glance while also saving space.

If you don’t have enough wall space for the pegboard, a toolbox also makes great storage. While some prefer one large standing tool box, others may enjoy having a tool box for each level of DIY needs.

If you use a cloth style tool bag, always be sure to keep it in a very dry area. Unlike metal or plastic tool boxes, the cloth can create harm to your tools if it gets wet. Keep them off of the floor and away from moisture.

#2 - Keep your Tools Dry

You may think your keeping your tools in a safe environment but some of us forget how damp a basement or garage can get due to humidity. If you have no choice but to store your tools in a humid environment, consider investing in a dehumidifier or keeping them stored in a dark cool space within the humid area.

Always hang your garden tools. Your garage may seem dry but moisture easily creeps from concrete floors. Don’t let your garden tools rest on the concrete if possible.

Another tip to consider is to always store your power tools in their original cases. It helps keep them protected from damage and humidity. You can also use silica gel packs that come in most packages to help keep moisture at bay. Just simply toss one into your tool case or drawers that are holding your tools.

#3 - Keep Your Tools Clean

After each use, it is wise to clean your tools. If you’re prepared, the job can be simple and fast at the end of each use.

For hand tools, simply use a rag to wipe them down and if they are dirty, use soap and water. Always dry them very well after a wet cleaning. Using a small amount of WD-40 on them after washing will prevent them from rusting.

Garden tools simply need a good rinse or wipe down as well. If your garden tools have wooden handles, be sure to give them a good oil after every other use. This will prevent the wood from drying out, cracking and becoming brittle.

Power tools can be a tad harder to clean. Always make sure the tool is off or unplugged before cleaning. Keep dust off by using an air compressor or can of air to blow off all dust and dirt. Wipe down the surface with a dry rag and use a lubricant to lubricate any moving parts.
